Scientist in Residence – Sam Verne @ Hive Tasmania

  • Hive Tasmania 50 Main Street, Ulverstone Ulverstone, Tasmania 7315 Australia (map)

The exciting Scientist in Residence program returns for 2026, featuring PhD student Samuel Verne. Join Sam at Hive in January for fun hands-on activities, physics experiments, electric presentations and the Open Physics Lab in the afternoons.

Resident Scientist Biography

Samuel Verne is a science communicator, crystal grower and physicist, based out of Hobart with a keen interest in all areas of science. This was not always the case, his journey into science started with many questions, mostly about the more flammable parts of chemistry. On the way to finding the answers, he found more questions. Questions about electricity, energy and light. These were the questions the lead Sam into physics, investigating a massive range of scientific wonders, from the ethereal nature of light waves to the cosmic masses of space.

Over time the questions slowly changed. Sam now studies how light travels across the universe, specifically he is studying how clumps of matter that are larger than galaxies change the colour of light as they move through space. This is useful, because the changes in colour, tells us about the matter that makes up the clump, even if it is matter that we can’t see or touch, the material called dark matter.

Each activity is individually ticketed.
