Disrupted Tides – Penguin

  • Penguin Uniting Church 50 Main Street, Penguin Ulverstone, Tasmania 7315 Australia (map)

This August, the coast lights up to celebrate 150 years of Penguin with sound and light show Disrupted Tides on Penguin’s Uniting Church. The projection brings together light, sound and storytelling – exploring progress, nature and resilience.
Disrupted Tides turns Penguin’s coastline into a moving story about tension and transformation. At the centre? A single railway track – reimagined as a symbol of human progress cutting through the quiet strength of nature.
Through stunning visuals and immersive sound, this projection invites reflection on resilience, balance and what we trade in the name of progress. Created by artist Alex Moss, the work draws on Penguin itself: vulnerable, enduring and brave.
Artist’s words: “Disrupted Tides invites viewers to reflect on how a simple piece of infrastructure – a train track – can symbolise a larger, more disruptive force against the natural world. By contrasting the raw, vulnerable essence of the penguin (the natural environment) with the impersonal, brutal slice of human progress, the project aims to provoke thought about balance, resilience and the cost of progress in our rapidly changing world.”
Embrace the cold and winter like a local!
